Episode 147 - Farewell to Manzanar - Part 1

March 12, 2020 by Matthew Johnson in historical, documentary

”Farewell to Manzanar” from 1976 is our upcoming podcast Episode 150. Prior to that podcast we provide some background on the internment of people during World War II.

On February 19, 1942 President Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 – Authorizing the Secretary of War to Prescribe Military Areas – to prevent possible acts of espionage and sabotage. Executive Order 9066 empowered the military to determine what people and areas to include and the ways to accomplish the goal.

Based on the Executive Order The War Relocation Authority was created in March 1942. In addition, 10 Relocation Centers, 18 Civilian Assembly Centers, 9 Justice Department Detention Camps, 3 Citizen Isolation Centers, 3 Federal Bureau of Prisons locations, 18 U.S. Army Facilities and 7 Immigration & Naturalization Service Facilities were operational.
